Today former-Charlton boss Alan Curbishley is being linked with the vacant Aston Villa job.

The 52 year-old made 36 appearances for the Midlander’s in his playing career but was never regarded as a fan’s favourite.

Experience

Curbishley is vastly experienced in the top flight but has had mixed results.

Charlton

Falcao decline a real shame, says Ranieri

Ex-Monaco boss Claudio Ranieri has described the decline of Chelsea striker Radamel Falcao as a real shame .

Falcao has struggled for goals since swapping the Ligue 1 side for Manchester United last season and moving to Jose Mourinho s side this year.

The 29-year-old has only scored five times in the Premier League from 35 appearances over that 18-month period at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge.

Ranieri was in charge of Monaco between 2012 and 2014, a spell which covered the Colombia international s debut season in the principality, and has been saddened to watch him struggle.

It is a real shame, a real shame because he is a great guy, the Leicester City boss told Omnisport.

He is a real champion, a very hard worker. He is incredible and I wish…

Premier League fixtures: Revenge on Tottenham´s early agenda

Tottenham may be out for revenge when they start the 2017-18 Premier League season at Newcastle United before Chelsea are entertained as the first visitors to their temporary Wembley home.

Tottenham, who are in the process of building a new stadium, won just one of the four European games they played at the national stadium last season and were also beaten by Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals.

They will hope to avenge that result in the second week of the season and strike an early blow in the title race having finished seven points behind Chelsea last campaign, but not before visiting a Newcastle side that handed them a high-profile 5-1 humiliation on the final day of 2015-16 when already relegated to ensure Spurs finished below arch-rivals Arsenal.

Elche 0-3 Real Madrid: Valverde and Benzema on target to extend unbeaten streak

Real Madrid extended their unbeaten streak this season to 15 games across all competitions with a 3-0 LaLiga victory against Elche, despite seeing three goals disallowed by VAR.

Federico Valverde opened the scoring with a fine strike from outside the box, his sixth goal of the season, with Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio sealing the result in the second half.

The Frenchman s goal came after he had seen three attempts disallowed by VAR for offside, which could have been decisive had Carlos Clerc headed home a glorious opportunity for an equaliser.

Andriy Lunin s save kept him at bay, however, with Benzema s goal then ensuring there would be no comeback and Asensio adding further gloss to the scoreline late on.

Persipura beat Chonburi to top group

Indonesian team Persipura have edged closer to the knockout stages of the AFC Cup after beating Thai club Chonburi 3-0 in Jayapura.

Competition newcomers Persipura began their third game knowing that victory would be enough to take them top of Group H.

And the 2009 quarter-finalists Chonburi offered little resistance as Persipura took the lead inside the opening 10 minutes, when Yustinus Pae found the back of the net.

Persipura, who were runners-up in last year s Indonesian Super League, were 2-0 ahead before half time Titus Bonai extending their advantage.

And all three points were assured for the home side six minutes from time when Lukas Mandowen made it 3-0 after a mistake by the Chonburi goalkeeper Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool.

Real Madrid v Basel Preview: Break from La Liga woes for Ancelotti´s men

Real Madrid will attempt to put aside underwhelming La Liga form as they begin their UEFA Champions League defence versus Basel on Tuesday.

Claims that Carlo Ancelotti s men lost their balance with the close-season departures of Angel di Maria and Xabi Alonso have been strengthened by a spluttering start to 2014-15.

Having begun this term with a Supercopa de Espana loss to neighbours Atletico, the European champions appeared to be back on track when easing past Cordoba 2-0 in their La Liga opener.

The promise gleaned from that sparked a remarkable spell where they pulverised Real Sociedad early in their next fixture, moving 2-0 inside 11 minutes.

However, that game ended in a shock 4-2 defeat, made worse when Atletico who they beat in the Champions Leagu…

Prediction: Vasco vs Cruzeiro

Best Odds: 19/20

Bookmaker:

Two sides who are seeking a much-welcomed boost on Saturday night, Vasco will welcome Cruzeiro to the Maracana this weekend.

Vasco

Starting with the hosts, while Vasco might have signed off June with a crucial 1-0 victory against Cuiaba, caretaker boss Willian Batista saw his temporary squad come crashing back down to earth last week. Eventually getting hit with a routine 2-0 defeat at the hands of Botafogo, the Rio de Janeiro-based outfit find themselves tipped as a leading contender to be hit with an immediate second-tier return in 2023. Showing a string of issues on either side of June’s international break, the Admirals have now lost seven of their previous eight showdowns against Serie A opposition a run that stems all the way…
